Usage
:
1. Gather Your Ingredients :
Before you start, collect the ingredients you wish to grind. Common items include spices like coriander seeds, cumin seeds, or grains such as rice and lentils.
2. Prepare the Grinder :
Ensure that your pithi grinder is clean and dry. If it has been used previously, it may retain flavors from past ingredients. Rinse it with water and let it dry completely before use.
The grinder can be mounted on a tabletop surface using the mount which is inbuilt with the pithi grinder.
3. Measure Your Ingredients :
Depending on the size of your grinder, measure out the amount of ingredients you want to grind. It’s advisable not to overload the grinder; start with smaller batches for better results.
4. Place Ingredients in the Grinder :
Add your measured ingredients into the bowl of the pithi grinder. Make sure they are evenly distributed across the surface for uniform grinding.
5. Start Grinding :
Begin with rotating the handle in a circular motion to apply pressure onto the ingredients.
Continue grinding until you achieve your desired consistency—this could range from coarse to fine depending on what you’re preparing.
6. Check Consistency :
Periodically stop grinding to check the consistency of your mixture. Scrape down any ingredients that may have stuck to the sides of the grinder using a spatula or spoon.
7. Clean Up :
Once you have achieved your desired texture, carefully remove the ground mixture from the grinder using a spoon.
Clean your pithi grinder after use by rinsing it with water and allowing it to air dry completely before storing it away.
Maintenance :
Wash with Water: If necessary, wash the components with warm water and mild soap. Ensure that no soap residue remains.
Dry Completely: After washing, dry all parts completely before reassembling to prevent rusting.
Identify Lubrication Points: Check where friction occurs in the mechanism (e.g., rotating parts).
Wipe Off Excess: After lubrication, wipe off any excess oil to avoid contamination of food products.
Examine Handles and Supports: Ensure that handles are secure and not loose; replace them if they show signs of damage.
Avoid Overloading: Do not overload the grinder beyond its capacity as this can strain its components.
Applications
:
Culinary Uses: The grinder can effectively crush whole spices such as coriander seeds, cumin seeds, and black peppercorns into powder. This enhances the flavor and aroma of dishes.
Making Pastes: The pithi grinder is ideal for creating pastes from various ingredients. For instance, it is commonly used to make curry pastes by grinding together fresh herbs like cilantro and mint with spices such as turmeric and chili peppers.
Preparing Flour: In some cultures, grains such as rice or millet are ground into flour using a pithi grinder. This method allows for the production of fresh flour that retains more nutrients compared to commercially processed flour.
